Cyclone Nisha hit northern Sri Lanka on Nov. 25th '08, causing heavy rains and flooding. Jaffna district recorded the highest rainfall in nine decades. About 20 deaths have been reported.
In Jaffna district, the hardest hit area, more than 330,000 people were affected and over 40,000 houses were damaged, including 11,000 listed as destroyed. 247 temporary camps have been set up in Jaffna district alone since heavy flood waters forced many out of their homes in the low lying areas.
St. John Ambulance Jaffna in collaboration with AMDA Sri Lanka, assisted Regional District Health Service (RHDS) Jaffna in conducting medical camps for the affected people. The Jaffna Training Centre of the St. John Ambulance was also under water. |
