colossians 3:2 commentary

Sometimes we say of a man, "Music is his life--Sport is his life--He lives for his work." The guilt which a broken law charged on the conscience is gone by an act infinitely more glorifying to God than the personal righteousnesses of all the men that ever lived, not to speak of the conscious pardon which is also secured to those who possess it. (i) The wife is to be submissive to her husband; but the husband is to love his wife and to treat her with all kindness. Hence, too, a main part of the difference between these two epistles. It was not the Father, but the Godhead. This is the spirit which never loses its patience with its fellow-men. Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all ( Colossians 3:11 ). The two words are orge ( G3709) and thumos ( G2372) , and the difference between them is this. What believers must do now, enabled by the Holy Spirit, is to fight the good fight of faith by focusing upward rather than downward and "around-ward". ", How good as well as vast the mind of the Spirit of God! In contrast to the Gnostics, they do not try to climb a ladder of countless intermediate spirit beings. Colossians 3:1,2. That is the meaning of all that seems good in the world's piety. "Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will-worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh." Yet there is nothing more common; it is precisely what men, and sometimes Christians to no small extent, are doing now very generally; and what have they gained by it? Sir Arnold Lunn, in Memory to Memory, quotes an incident about Field-Marshal Montgomery from a book by M. E. Clifton James. In the ancient world children were very much under the domination of their parents. If there was one thing the ancient world needed it was mercy. We may be content to be hidden while He is hidden; but He is not always to be out of sight. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, [now, you put on Jesus Christ, you put off these things, put off anger, wrath, and malice and instead, put on] bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, and if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. The expression "brethren," though of course flowing from Christ, brings forward their relationship by grace to each other. If a divine person was pleased to appear here below, and to bring in unimagined goodness and power, dealing with every need and every one with whom He came in contact, and who sought or even accepted His gracious action, it might have been supposed that man could not resist such unhesitating love and unmeasured power. But there will be this difference--from now on the Christian will view everything against the background of eternity and no longer live as if this world was all that mattered. Let the word of Christ" (it was God's word, but still called the word of Christ here) "dwell in you richly in all wisdom." So, as the wife submits, the husband finds it easy to show his love. There is a figure especially characteristic of the divine nature morally considered I need not say light, as we are told more fully in the epistle to the Ephesians. Next, the doctrine is applied still more definitely. "Behold, He comethevery eye shall see Him" ( Revelation 1:7 ). "Put on, therefore" (says he, in the enjoyment of such grace. You must live as God's people. Now. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. It is all well for a Jew, because he has got his abstinences and his restrictions. These restrictions dealt with meats and drinks, and such like things, which perish in the using. For don't be deceived, if you are living after the flesh, you are not an heir of the kingdom of God. The Christian's standard of values will be God's not men's. Thus the mystery includes, first, Christ as Head above, we though here being united by the Holy Ghost to Him glorified. This is unfortunate, since his works contain priceless gems of information that are found nowhere except in the ancient writings of the Jews. Worldly lusts are to be denied, the deeds of the body are to be mortified, carnal desires are not to be gratified and indulged, provision is not to be made for the flesh, to fulfil its lusts; and particularly the vain philosophy of Jews and Gentiles, the traditions of the elders, the ceremonies of the law, which lay in earthly things, in worldly observances, the difference of meats and drinks, keeping of days, months, and years, new moons, feasts, and sabbath days; the rudiments of the world, the commandments and doctrines which were of the earth, and lay in not touching, tasting, and handling certain things that are on earth, and which perish with the using, as opposed to the doctrines of the Gospel, and ordinances of Christ, which are from above, and come from heaven, and have a spiritual and heavenly use: and which is the sense chiefly intended, though it is best to understand the words in their largest compass. The fundamental effect of this Christian teaching is that marriage becomes a partnership. Ought I not to share my Master's shame and dishonour here? "Within a few yards of where I was standing, a very young soldier, still looking sea-sick from his voyage, came struggling along gamely trying to keep up with his comrades in front. "That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing," urges he, "being fruitful in every good work." In fact, this was their fault: they were not content with Christ and Him only. He exhorts to the mortification of sin, in the various instances of it (v. 5-11). That which brought in thousands on the day of Pentecost and afterwards was the preaching and the faith that Jesus was made Lord. So, in spiritual things, the mere taking up and repeating thoughts, deep and high but unproved experience, cannot be the fruit of the Spirit of God's teaching. Simple, isn't it? The Spirit, having secured His glory, is more at liberty as to every other topic. Who could ever have combined with God's glory such a place for man too? Is Christ in the glorious presence of God? And the tragedy is that many people have become so habituated to unclean talk that they are unaware that they are using it. Just when he got level with us he tripped up and fell flat on his face. 2 To the d saints and faithful brothers 1 in Christ at Colossae:. Observe, (1.) Towards the end of his life Joad came back to religion and returned to the family of the Church; but it was not without a struggle, and it was the insistence of the Christian Church on sexual purity which kept him so long from making the final decision. Have you mortified the deeds of the flesh? In his autobiography, Memory to Memory, Sir Arnold Lunn has a chapter on Cyril Joad, the well-known philosopher, whom he knew well. They had really themselves slipped away in heart: no such hope had found favour otherwise. Orge ( G3709) is anger which has become inveterate; it is long-lasting, slow-burning anger, which refuses to be pacified and nurses its wrath to keep it warm. Thereby he shows that God's love and grace have gone out to the ends of the earth, and that there is no "most favoured nation" clause in his economy. They needed rather reproof, and they are warned that the course on which they were entering was slippery and perilous. (3.) That we might teach and admonish one another.] Besides, Christ is the first-born of all creation. Thus whoever by faith receives simply the intimation of this verse, as of a crowd of other scriptures, has all this very needless controversy closed for him; he knows and is sure by divine teaching that Jesus was not merely the highest of that creation which had been already, but the beginning of a new thing and its Head. One of the earliest descriptions of a Church service we possess is that of Pliny, the Roman governor of Bithynia, who sent a report of the activities of the Christians to Trajan, the Roman Emperor, in which he said, "They meet at dawn to sing a hymn to Christ as God." Set your affection on things above, not on things on the, set their affections on the things that are above. It is really what man is; and such is the nature which alone we had as children of Adam. But to play up to that is to open the door for all kinds of demonstrations of love. It was in no wise the old thing, elevated by the glory of Him who had deigned to descend into it, but a new state of things, of which the risen Christ is both the Head and beginning; as it is said, "Who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the pre-eminence.". I wonder, then, if we can read Col. 3:4 as referring to the present and future before the parousia. It is a spiritual kingdom for those who are living and walking after the Spirit, regardless of what you may say or affirm to be so. 2.Not the things that are on earth. And what was to be done? Some of old were not Jews nor Gentiles, but baptized men and women. It is the word used when Jesus said, "My yoke is easy." No man, I will not say anticipated, but approached in thought such a portion for souls on earth. Undoubtedly the one word would suggest the other. Have a mind all of whose thoughts are fixed on the things which are above, not upon the things on earth. She trusts my judgment; she trusts my wisdom. thesis, Dallas Theological Seminary, 1992); John A. McLean, "Did Jesus Correct the Disciples View of the Kingdom?" The Christian is one with Him. Our affections should not be fixed on houses and lands; on scenes of fashion and gaiety; on low and debasing enjoyments. It pertains to a life in this world to say, "Touch not; taste not; handle not." All the privileges and rights belonged to the parent and all the duties to the child. Besides, we are one bread, one body. The Jew looked down on every other nation. When she knows she is loved supremely, she is secure, and she feels that security, and thus anything my man does is all right. His master could thrash or brand or maim or even kill him at his caprice; he had not even the right of marriage. How blessed! There was no doubt a suitability for each line of truth in the wants of the saints respectively addressed; nor do I think it can be intelligently questioned that the condition of the Ephesian saints was better than that of those at Colosse. You can't. Here the candy, ha, ha, ha, ha." THE MUTUAL OBLIGATION ( Colossians 3:18-25 ; Colossians 4:1 continued). Moreover, worldly lusts, the members which are on the earth, earthly pleasures that are sinful, may be here meant. THE THINGS WHICH MUST BE LEFT BEHIND ( Colossians 3:5-9 a continued). II. The story goes that a French merchant purchased an enormous 112-3/16-carat diamond. (i) We have seen repeatedly that the early Christians regarded baptism as a dying and a rising again. And what a deliverance from self to see Christ in them! The mystery is now revealed, even the relation of Christ and the church; the actual testimony of God's counsels in Christ to those who compose His body. It is easy to distort the truth; an alteration in the tone of voice or an eloquent look will do it; and there are silences which can be as false and misleading as any words. The workman must do everything as if he was doing it for Christ. (i) Christian speech must be kind. The Colossians, insignificant ex-pagans from a third-rate country town, will be seen in a glory which, if it were now to appear, one might be tempted to worship." (Wright) 2. If then you are risen with Christ [If you are risen with Christ going back to buried with Christ in baptism, now risen with Him], seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth at the right hand of God ( Colossians 3:1 ). require us to pronounce on evil ways in order to look into this evil doctrine or that; but the apostle speaks now of the saints in their ordinary and normal manner. "You must not only seek heaven, you must think heaven" (Lightfoot). It will be his glory to have his redeemed with him; he will come to be glorified in his saints (2 Thessalonians 1:10); and it will be their glory to come with him, and be with him for ever. Impossible that He could be aught but the first-born. Satan knew well what he sought in alienating many a Christian from this blessed man of God, and in carping at his ministry, and the testimony he was given to bear. Instead of letting the reins free now to run in the race of improving the world and bettering society, or any of the objects that occupy men as such, the saints of God should abstain altogether. Immediately after this Paul goes on to lay down a series of ethical principles which make it quite clear that he expects the Christian to go on with the work of this world and to maintain all its normal relationships. These last three forbidden things have all to do with speech. Now comes the positive character to be borne) "Put on, therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved." 3. "He is the head of all principality and power: in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the flesh [for so it runs] by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen.". None could pretend that He had ever refused a single soul; none could say that they had gone empty away. Like a mine of unknown and inexhaustible wealth, the treasures of wisdom are all in Him hidden, but not in order to remain so; they only need to be explored for you to attain "unto the riches" in them ( Colossians 2:2 ); but until you, Colossians, press after attaining the full knowledge "hidden." Why be found running from the substance after the shadow? First the apostle brings in all things as a whole, the universal creaturehood, earthly and heavenly; thus giving us an adequate notion of the perfect triumph of God at the time when it seemed as if Satan had completely succeeded through man against the counsels of God. Sorrowful circumstances may, alas! Colossians 3:1-4 1 Peter 2:4-9; Colossians 3:1-4 You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house. The stronger our faith, and the warmer our love, the more will our comfort be. Can we speak it, remembering that he will hear?" This will obviously give him a new set of values. And when Christ who is our life shall appear, we shall appear with Him in glory. We must note carefully what Paul means by that. For the baptized soul confesses that the grace of God gives death to sin in Him who died and rose again. But alas! Secondly, Christ, meanwhile, is in or among the Gentiles here below. Thus no room was left for striving to die. "As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellow-servant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit." Let His peace rule. Not that others did not supplement this or that. Must we not first and foremost be subject to the truth? A man does not decide to be an *apostle. . (i) Paul begins by addressing the Colossians as chosen of God, dedicated and beloved. It is one of the tragic facts of religious history that Luther's father was so stern to him that Luther all his days found it difficult to pray: "Our Father." They have undoubtedly taught that which is consistent with it and even supposes it. He who probed it all cannot be endured. No matter how clever and religious those laws may appear, they will not succeed in controlling the desires of the body (20-23).Because they have died to sin, Christians are not in bondage to things of the world as the Gnostics are. Is it kind?" So then, as the chosen of God, dedicated and beloved, clothe yourself with a heart of pity, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience. Somehow or another, freethinkers and superstitious men coalesce in reality. Not on things on the earth - Wealth, honor, pleasure. There is no proof of the sort. Let us take the cases one by one and look at them in the light of this new principle. In it is another kind of blessedness and glory; for it a new order of existence appears; and not least of all beings we ought to understand this difference. In moral truth, as well as literal fact, the veil, shadowing their state, was not yet lifted up from the unseen world. Both must be directed at things above. Neither completeness in Christ, nor joyful sense of heavenly relationship, nor heed to our own relations in this life, should weaken for an instant, but rather minister to an increased sense of the need and value of depending on God. Show yourselves the slaves of the Lord Christ. They needed to learn especially the vanity of all that man's mind delights in. Fathers, do not irritate your children, that they may not lose heart. He always ends with an uncompromising and crystal clear statement of the ethical demands of Christianity in the situation in which his friends are at the moment. I am aware that men have reasoned much about it; but this is a proof that evidence fails. It was amongst these things that you once spent your lives; when you lived among them; but now you must divest yourselves of all these things--anger, temper, malice, slander, foul talk which issues from your mouth. Yet most people today have never heard of John Gill. In the one they are waiting to be taken to heaven in an actual sense; in the other they belong already to heaven by virtue of their union with Christ. Leave me alone." "Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving." You're not under the laws: touch not, handle not, taste not. Hence it seems to me not in whom, but rightly "wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God." [Note: See Cleon L. Rogers Jr., "The Davidic Covenant in Acts-Revelation," Bibliotheca Sacra 151:601 (January-March 1994):81-82; John F. Walvoord, "Biblical Kingdoms Compared and Contrasted," in Issues in Dispensationalism, especially pp. Yet He has absolute peace, never broken or ruffled for an instant. Here we see the other side Christ in or among you Gentiles, "the hope of glory." (ii) The really new thing about the Christian ethic of personal relationships is that all relationships are in the Lord. Lesson 1: In Christ, In Flagstaff (Colossians 1:1-2) Lesson 2: Authentic Christianity (Colossians 1:3-8) Lesson 3: What Spiritual Growth Looks Like (Colossians 1:9-12) Lesson 4: Forgiven by God! Josephus uses it as a description of Isaac, the man who dug wells and gave them to others because he would not fight about them ( Genesis 26:17-25). Read full chapter Colossians 1 Colossians 3 As Paul said, "For me to live is Christ," and I love this powerful statement.] These are alas! The hope laid up for us in heaven supposes a position on the earth. Fornication and uncleanness must go. Am I then false or true to the constant sign of my Master's death? It is the law in a new and impossible shape. Now, that ye are converted to God, act in reference to heavenly things as ye did formerly in reference to those of earth; and vice versa. Again, on each Lord's day, when we are gathered together to Christ's name, what is before us according to God's word and will? We must walk the more closely with God in all the instances of evangelical obedience. It is not Christ Himself, as inEphesians 3:1-21; Ephesians 3:1-21, the wondrous issue even now in us by the power of the Spirit; but, at least, in His word is found (what the Colossians needed) an active and most pure spring of instruction and counsel, and mutuality of help by it. "And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. One of the best tests of any action is: "Can we do it, calling upon the name of Jesus? Through Christ they have life directly in God. God is the Creator, man the creature, and in the presence of the Creator the creature cannot feel anything else but humility. If a man says he abides in Christ then he ought to be walking as Christ walked. The apostle exhorts us to set our hearts upon heaven and take them off from this world ( v. 1-4 ). The word of God assigns one greater than all, which is the true and only key to the person and work of Christ: "For by him were all things created.". As for the gospel, it is not a question whether every creature hears, but such is the sphere; and doubtless if the apostle could have preached to every individual in the world, he would have gladly done it. The Rheims version translates it benignity. The word father in his mind stood for nothing but severity. As Rev., set your mind. In the which you also walked sometime, when you lived in them. In this phrase, however, all that the apostle asserts is in relation to the invisible God. We must mind the concerns of another world more than the concerns of this. Accordingly, he brings in now for this object the twofold truth: "for in him," says he, "dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. There was no such notion as only caring for the saints in his own particular place. The master must remember that he too has a Master--Christ in heaven. It has only to be heard by a heart touched by grace to carry conviction. Now that he has come, the shadows are of no further interest. And whatever you may be doing in word or in deed, do all things in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. And the reason is because Christ sits at the right hand of God. (2.) The word we have so translated is kakia ( G2549) ; it is a difficult word to translate, for it really means that viciousness of mind from which all the individual vices spring. Under Roman law a slave could not possess any property whatsoever and here he is being promised nothing less than the inheritance of God. It is not a question of the lower ranks of creation only, but takes in the highest "whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him." Paul only. As Rev., set your mind. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. Mortify, therefore, those fleshly things. In it there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free man. The tendency of any body of people is sooner or later to fly apart; love is the one bond which will hold them together in unbreakable fellowship. There is patience (makrothumia, G3115) . Had it been possible, consistently with other plans of God (which it was not), for Him to be the last (in point of fact) born here below, He had been the first-born all the same. He who believes this would understand that it was still an unrevealed secret during Old Testament times. In view of the freedom that Christ has won for them, the Colossian believers must not listen to those who try to force them to obey the rules and regulations of the Israelite law. Clearly, therefore, the whole character of the new system depends, first, on the Deity of the incarnate Saviour, and, secondly, on the glorious truths of His atoning death and of His resurrection. They were shadows. (2) He is at the right hand of God. Ha, ha. And that is, I've seen fathers sometimes tease their little babies until the baby screams in frustration. How blessed! Everything in our epistle is traced up to Christ as the head of all possible blessing. So "let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts;" that is, the very peace which Christ Himself lived and moved in. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here.". It's just, "Fathers, provoke not your children, lest they be discouraged." Neither the Gnostics nor any other unbelievers can understand this life, because the life is in Christ and therefore is hidden from their view. And. This is habitually His way. Ah!
