Reconstructive Activities for the Flood in Erdenet, Orkhon Aimag with Mongolian Red Cross
This was the first memorial collaboration activity with Mongolian Red Cross after concluding a cooperation agreement with them on August 27th, 2012.
On September 17th through 18th, 2012, AMDA and Mongolian Red Cross conducted the collaboration reconstructive activities in Erdenet, the capital of the Orkhon Aimag (province) for the flood damage. Erdenet is 400km away from Ulaanbaatar. Sixty seven families out of 300 families suffered the damage from the flood, which is 25% of the population in Erdenet. No major river is flowing into town. However, a huge amount of water rushed into the town from the mountain due to heavy rain. A nurse from AMDA headquarter, 5 staff from Mongolian Red Cross Headquarter, 5 staff from Mongolian Red Cross Erdenet Branch and 20 Mongolian Red Cross volunteers participated in the activities.
After the assessment of damages from the disaster, Mongolian Red Cross Erdenet Branch made a list of families who needs support for their daily living essentials. AMDA donated food, and EU Red Cross donated blankets and stoves. Volunteers made those donated supplies ready to distribute to affected people. After a meeting with Mongolian Red Cross upon arrival in Erdenet, AMDA and Mongolian Red Cross distributed donated supplies to 64 affected families at the ceremony.
Three families could not join the ceremony with different reasons such as their father is sick or they live under poverty and have a lot of children. After the ceremony, AMDA staff member and Mongolian Red Cross visited their temporal yurts and handed over donated supplies to each family. Some of them said, "I want to say thank you many times and show you my appreciation.", and they sang a song.
