AMDA Reconstruction Activity for Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines

 

Leyte Medical Society (LMS) has been holding free monthly medical missions in collaboration with AMDA for the affected people from Typhoon Haiyan since March, 2014. The October medical mission was the last medical mission for the reconstruction of Typhoon Haiyan.

On October 19, 2014, officers and members of the Leyte Medical Society headed for Barangay Nula Tula located about 7 Kilometers north of Tacloban, for free medical mission, distribution of hygiene kits to 200 children and feeding of 200 children. Barangay Nula Tula was heavily affected by Typhoon Haiyan, especially along the seashore. Many houses and their roofs has been blown off, and inhabitants were living under tents right after the Typhoon. Now, people repaired their houses and are back to work.

 

During the free medical mission, the team could see 314 patients (174 adult patients, 140 pediatric patients). Among adult patients, hypertension, cough and cold, and arthritis were commonly seen. For pediatric patients, majority of them complained of cough and cold. Hygiene kits containing of tooth brash, face towel, bath soap and hand sanitizer were distributed to 200 children, and nutritious porridge with manna rice, sticky rice, chicken, carrots, potato were provided to children.

 

Those who received free care were so delighted and thankful to have free consultation and medicines which was a relief to their budget.
