AMDA Emergency Bulletin #1: Mt. Merapi Volcano Eruption, Central Java, Indonesia
(AMDA coordinator leaving for Indonesia from Okayama, Japan)
In response to Mt. Merapi's volcanic eruption in Indonesia that occurred on Nov. 5th, 2010, AMDA Headquarters and AMDA Indonesia have sent a joint medical relief team to Central Java on Nov. 16th. According to WHO's announcement, the number of casualties is 168 (as of Nov. 9th) and approximately 300,000 people have been evacuated. It is also reported that as many as 17,770 people are infected with acute respiratory infection.
AMDA's relief team comprising one coordinator/nurse, one pediatrician, two anesthetists and one medical student will arrive in Solo, the capital of Central Java, on the afternoon of Nov. 17th. The team will meet with YKP Surakarta, AMDA's local counterpart, to discuss its relief work in the affected area; mainly aiming at conducting mobile clinic in Magelang and Klaten districts.
